1. SPIE Optics & Photonics Conference

Migma presented a paper, A Multi-Pedestrian Detection and Counting System Using Fusion of Stereo Camera and Laser Scanner, at SPIE Optics & Photonics Conference held at San Diego, CA, from August 1st to 5th, 2010. This research work was supported by FHWA under SBIR program. In this paper, Migma presented an advanced pedestrian counting system using a stereo camera and a laser scanner. A mapping algorithm was developed to map the detection locations in the laser scanner coordinates to the stereo-image coordinates. For pedestrian tracking, the nonparametric statistical hypothesis tests such as Kolmogorov- Smirnov test were applied for the association of pedestrian tracks spatially close. The pedestrian image features such as SIFT were incorporated into Kalman filter for the multi-pedestrian tracking. Test results based on the data collected at a street intersection have demonstrated that this pedestrian counting system can accurately detect, track and count multiple pedestrians walking in a large group. 2. 2010 ITE Western District Annual Meeting

In June 2010, Migma participated in an automated pedestrian detection panel meeting at 2010 ITE Western District Annual Meeting held at San Francisco, CA. As one of the six panel members, Migma presented its pedestrian detection product, MigmaPDTM, and its performance evaluated at Phillips Academy located in Andover, MA. This product has been fielded since August, 2009. It can trigger the beacon flashers once pedestrians are detected in the detection zone. MigmaPDTM has outperformed both IR and microwave based pedestrian detectors. IR and microwave technologies are currently recognized as two best candidates for the outdoor pedestrian detections. Although stereo vision based pedestrian detection technologies have been studied over the past decades, there are currently no field-proven commercial stereoscopic products for pedestrian detections. MigmaPDTM represents the cutting edge technology for pedestrian detection in the outdoor environment. The presentation slides can be downloaded here.

3. MigmaPDTM Field Installation at South Hadley, MA

 

Although field test results have shown that MigmaPDTM has a great potential, extensive field tests under various weather conditions are needed for it to be commercially viable. Various hardware and software issues unforeseen during the product design can be exposed during the field tests and can be resolved in a timely fashion. Performance evaluation and benefit analysis, especially for visually impaired pedestrians, can also help ease the concerns of the effectiveness of MigmaPDTM. Moreover, results from large scale field tests can help future research in the field of pedestrian detections. As an initial system installation of this large scale field test project, Migma has successfully installed a system at South Hadley, MA. This midblock crossing is extensively used by the visually impaired people. Further installations at AZ, CA, MA, ME and NH have been planned where MigmaPDTM will be installed at both midblock crossings and signalized intersections.
